Valencia February Testing

The first testing period for 2010 ended with McLaren and Ferrari setting the pace. Of course this fact cannot judge the new season starting next month, but is a very good indication of the winter progress that the team have made. Due to the refueling ban for 2010, the teams had to test their cars at maximum loads and find how the cars would react in the change of load in race time.

Ferrari's cars were quite impressive, especially if you compare it to last year's performance. Fernando Alonso on his debut inside a Ferrari Car set the pace for three consecutive days with an outstandig time of 1:11.470 sec, just an instance ahead of his team mate, Felipe Massa who stopped the clock at 1:11.722. Eventhough Alonso's time was recorder with a light car his overall performance was strongly dominant, showing how intimidated the Spanish driver is on winning this year's title. Scuderia Ferrari was also very pleased by Felipe Massa's performance, showing that the Brazilian is back for good and a strong contender for winning the driver's championship, which he almost won 2 years ago.

McLaren on the other hand was very fast but slower than Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton made a 24-lap run and had a fastest lap of 1:12.256 sec at the middle of his run. That shows that McLaren -like Ferrari- is in great shape due to the fact that McLaren needed enough fuel to cover 24 laps. Jenson Button however was not as impressive as you would expect from the 2009 F1 Champion. He was fifth overall 0.695 sec behind his team mate's lap time, and more than 1 sec behind Fernando Alonso.

Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher seemed to feel very comfortable on the track despite being a bit slower than the Red Cars and McLaren. Schuey needed 20 laps to settle in the new car and stopped the clock at 1:12.438 - almost 0.5 sec faster than his team mate. Both Mercedes cars were running on similar setups and showed great consistency on long runs.

RedBull Racig will join testing on the second testing session in Jerez.

While the track was covered by dust and rubber-free, Massa had a massive ten-lap period nailing 1:13 sec in all of them. At the beginning of the 3 - day testing period, all teams were running at medium fuel load, while the next two days were experimenting at different loads to get prepared for 2010's rule changes.  It is vital for the teams to find the optimum setup on heavy loads and at the same time to maintain their pace throughout the race at lower weight loads.

Ross Brawn said that his cars were definitely slower than McLaren and Ferrari. "We are reasonable but no as quick as Ferrari...Lewis looked quick, so it looks like we've got a bit of work to do."

Sauber and Renault showed that will fight for the next places on grid, with rather good performances. Pedro de la Rosa and Kamui Kobayashi finished runners-up to Ferrari on all three days of the test. Despite the fact that their times we very good, they didn't manage to complete many laps, running very light with small fuel load.

Renault showed some very good early stage signs, with Rober Kubica on the cockpit. Kubica, on Tuesday went for a long run with a heavy on load car managing to sustain a consistent run.

William with Brazilian Ruben Barichello and Nico Hulkenberg (ex reserve driver) showed some good elements. Barichello run for 256 miles on Tuesday getting very exhausted.
