The first testing period for 2010 ended with McLaren and Ferrari setting the pace. Of course this fact cannot judge the new season starting next month, but is a very good indication of the winter progress that the team have made. Due to the refueling ban for 2010, the teams had to test their cars at maximum loads and find how the cars would react in the change of load in race time.
Ferrari's cars were quite impressive, especially if you compare it to last year's performance. Fernando Alonso on his debut inside a Ferrari Car set the pace for three consecutive days with an outstandig time of 1:11.470 sec, just an instance ahead of his team mate, Felipe Massa who stopped the clock at 1:11.722. Eventhough Alonso's time was recorder with a light car his overall performance was strongly dominant, showing how intimidated the Spanish driver is on winning this year's title. Scuderia Ferrari was also very pleased by Felipe Massa's performance, showing that the Brazilian is back for good and a strong contender for winning the driver's championship, which he almost won 2 years ago.
McLaren on the other hand was very fast but slower than Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton made a 24-lap run and had a fastest lap of 1:12.256 sec at the middle of his run. That shows that McLaren -like Ferrari- is in great shape due to the fact that McLaren needed enough fuel to cover 24 laps. Jenson Button however was not as impressive as you would expect from the 2009 F1 Champion. He was fifth overall 0.695 sec behind his team mate's lap time, and more than 1 sec behind Fernando Alonso.
Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher seemed to feel very comfortable on the track despite being a bit slower than the Red Cars and McLaren. Schuey needed 20 laps to settle in the new car and stopped the clock at 1:12.438 - almost 0.5 sec faster than his team mate. Both Mercedes cars were running on similar setups and showed great consistency on long runs.
RedBull Racig will join testing on the second testing session in Jerez.

Richard Branson, the Virgin Corporation boss, was very proud about the creation of the first F1 car by Virgin. He added that ''It's been fantastic to be part of this journey almost from the very beginning and to see a great engineering mind at work.I am sure we will be measured by how fast the car is on the track in Jerez next week, but i hope that doesn't overshadow the far bigger achievement of pulling an entire racing team together and taking a brave step that defies convention''
